An adult miniature colleague hands a closed laptop across a school office counter. A small painted mint asitplan arrow mascot stands on the counter, with its original friendly face and limbs, pointing towards the task. Heading: “Laptop, charger, ready to go”. asitplan, audit strategise achieve.

Where are the school laptops, and are they ready to use?

You find the laptop, but its charger is missing. Another one has gone to a different classroom. A simple equipment list can make it easier to prepare lessons and decide what the school needs to buy.

Start with a place you know

Choose one classroom, office or laptop trolley. List the equipment there and what people use it for. You do not need to understand how the school network works to notice a missing charger or a computer that takes too long to start.

Write down the date of the check. If you cannot find something, mark it as “location to check”. That gives a colleague a clear question to follow up.

Give each item a useful record

A laptop record might include its school label, room, charger and whether it works. The label helps everyone refer to the same device. If the IT team already has a list, ask to update that list rather than starting a competing spreadsheet.

Talk to the people who use the equipment. A laptop on a shelf may be awaiting repair, being kept as a spare or no longer needed. Its location alone will not tell you which.

Follow equipment when it moves

For example, a teacher borrows six laptops for another room. A quick note of who took them and when they should return is more useful than hoping someone remembers.

Choose where that note will go and who will update it. Keep the process short enough for a busy school day. On return, check the chargers as well as the laptops.

Use the list to solve a problem

You might find that a lesson needs working chargers more urgently than new laptops. You might also find equipment that needs the IT team's attention before it can be used again.

Discuss those findings before spending money. Ask IT to check any spare device before putting it back into use. Finding it is the first step; knowing it can do the job comes next.

This week, check one small set of equipment and share the missing pieces with the people who can help.
